It’s a cliché, but in this case it fits perfectly. My son, Jeremy, is 454 miles or 731 km away, but I haven’t been able to see him nor his wife, Lucy, since spring, 2019!
They came here for a few days around Mother’s Day that year, and it was wonderful, but I haven’t seen them since.
I figured I’d be able to fly there later that year, but he was working non-stop (he’s a film/video editor, works long hours on contract) so it wasn’t feasible.
Then I was counting on summer 2020 – June is lovely in Southampton, Long Island! But along came you-know-what – an uninvited visitor known as SARS-CoV-2, the perpetrator of Covid-19! Argh!
Well good news and bad news – the good news is that we’re all okay and staying well with masks, distancing, etc. But visits are out. The Canada-U.S. land border is closed (except for essential workers). I could fly there, but then I’d have to quarantine for two weeks! Same if they’d come here to Montreal. Not too great, really…
Meanwhile we do a lot of FaceTime and Messenger videochatting… while saving on plane fare!
Patience was never my strong suit. Sigh…
And with all the money saved now, you could have a super vacation together at some point! 🙂
(Trying to look on the bright side!)

It really is a bummer of a time with regards to travel and seeing family. Hang in there! This too shall pass.

Sigh. You’re so right. In fact my dear mom was fond of that saying… Thanks for your empathy… ❤

Video chats are no substitute for in-person meeting but they’re something. We’re all just waiting for the day when we can board a plane and feel safe.
