Insomnia & Insanity

Since I slept nary a wink last night (no known reason!) and still don’t feel sleepy, I’d like to tell you about the thoughts that kept me awake. 😳

At 2:30 a.m., awake since 1:00 a.m., I was struck by the thought of how blind the Trump-loving “Christian” evangelists are. I mean, wilfully blind. Those who ardently wish to turn the U.S. into a theocracy, who want to jettison the Constitution and replace it with Biblical laws according to the Ten Commandments, those people seem utterly blind to his adulteries, bankruptcies, and sexual assaults. They disregard his lack of any religious adherence, his stiffing people who work for him, his hypocrisy (hiring undocumented folks while railing against “illegal aliens”), his payments to porn stars, and all the rest.

Is this not the very definition of cognitive dissonance? To idolize such a horrible figure of a “man,” while choosing to be blind to his blatant failings? To want such an ignorant sociopath to lead the most powerful nation on Earth?

But there is a method lurking behind their insanity. It really doesn’t matter to these crazies what Trump is like or what he does. He is merely their figurehead, their vessel. He is like an extreme incarnation of Peter Sellers’s simpleton character, Chance the Gardener, in “Being There,” a 1979 film. He is a walking empty shell, into which these ultra-right-wing “Christians” pour their hopes for destroying the government and creating a theocracy in its place.

Trump won’t mind. He’ll be a happy “leader,” delighting in whatever power he will have in such a regime.

May this not happen!!

There are none so blind
as those
who will not see.
