Sugar Cookies

Holiday time is… cookie time! Must… buy… flour! 😅🍪🍪🍪

Okay, I admit I haven’t baked sugar cookies since my kids were little. They are now, well, not little! They’re all grown up. But why can’t I make some for John and me? Come to think of it, why can’t we make them together?!

I dug into an old recipe box and found this very stained, very old and worn recipe, in my handwriting, on a 3×5-inch index card. I wanted to scan it in order to show it to you, but my scanner is being very naughty and is misbehaving. So instead, I’ll relay what it says:

COOKIES (Ma)  […because it was my mother’s recipe! 😀]

  • 1 cup shortening (1/2 lb. margarine) [Can you use butter, or Crisco? Probably!]
  • 1 cup brown sugar [yummier than white sugar!]
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. baking powder [I have no idea why]
  • 3 cups flour (scant) [I think that means “slightly less.”]
  • 1 tsp. vanilla [can’t hurt! 😁]

Mix everything together, dry stuff and wet, and then blend. Dough will be kind of stiff. Roll out dough with rolling pin so that it’s only about 1/8″ thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters. (Kids can be a big help! 😛) Sprinkle various cake/cookie sprinkles on cookies. (My faves were tiny chocolate bits or red sugar sprinkles; potpourri is festive too!) Bake on lightly greased cookie sheets for approx. 10 minutes at 350°F. Makes 50-54 cookies!

On the back of my recipe card, one of my kids had apparently scrawled :

COOKIES-BEST

I agree totally! 😅
