Friday Follies #258 – Making Grammar Great Again, One Hyphen at a Time

Happy February, FFers! Here’s a lineup of dreary desperadoes for you, language lawbreakers all! 😅

  1. Not only has it helped widen his palette and made him a more adventurous eater, but I’m hoping it’s also helping him hone some life skills so he’s not eating ramen throughout his 20s.
  2. “They’re really on the front lines,” Beauvais-St-Pierre said. “It’s incredibly important work and it’s a challenge in normal times, but even moreso now.”
  3. Born a child of privilege, …Williams decided early in life that a career in show business (particularly in comedy) was more preferable than being a lawyer.

And the corrections:

  1. Yes, there is a perfectly fine word spelled “palette.” However, that refers to different paint colours an artist might use – or the handheld board on which the artist may mix the paints. Above, the correct word should be palate. (In fact, the dictionary even says: Palette: Not to be confused with:
palatethe roof of the mouth; taste: a fine palate for gourmet food.)
  2. There is no such word as “moreso.” It should be two separate words: …it’s a challenge in normal times, but even more so now. (Any bets this was about Covid? 🙁)
  3. This blooper may not be evident at first. But when you think about it, the reason it’s wrong makes sense.  Because preferable already means “more desirable,” it is redundant to write more preferable. She found it preferable (not more preferable) to convert her overtime hours into leave.

Well, there you have it. Oh, by the way, I stole, er, I mean borrowed the nifty explanation regarding “preferable” from here. Bye for now, folks, have a good and safe week, and see you next Friday!

  1. 1-Artists everywhere are rolling their eyes and shaking their heads in disbelief.
2-It’s also incredibly important to use words that actually exist.
3-Yes, it’s definitely more better not to use “more preferable”. 😀
