Greetings, FF fans! The Grammar Cop spent a lot of time online this week, so two out of three of these English-challenged blunders come straight to you from the Internet.

1. HUFFINGTONPOST.COM: (I hate when this site makes mistakes, because their journalism appeals to my liberal tastes. Ah well, nobody’s perfect, least of all writers who were in a hurry, perhaps) Headline: “Media Helps Boost Donald Trump’s False Claim That ‘Millions’ Voted Illegally” (because most of them omitted the word “false”).
2. GLOBALNEWS.CA: (Headline under video) “Rescue Workers Pour Over Remnants of Plane Crash in Columbia”
3. CINEPLEX MAGAZINE: (Look, I had to get out of the house, okay? Went to see Arrival. By the way, I wrote a review of it here.) “The 10-minute standing ovation Hacksaw Ridge received after it’s Venice Film Festival premiere…”

And the corrections. Let’s discuss!

1. “Media Helps…” No! “it” doesn’t! Because the word media is plural! Therefore this should read: “Media Help to Boost…”  (I also like to add the word to in there, as it sounds less clunky.)  For those who don’t know, the singular of media is medium. The Internet is a medium. Print is a medium. Print and the Internet and television are media.
2. I hope the remnants didn’t get too wet. I assume the workers were pouring water over the remnants? No. They pored over the remnants. This was a sad, grim story… sullied a tad by use of a wrong word.
3. Grrrr. Number one on my List of Grammar Gaffes is: IT’S/ITS confusion!! The sentence here calls for the possessive form. This was the premiere of Hacksaw Ridge. So: The showing was its premiere. NO APOSTROPHE. When you insert an apostrophe, you turn it into a contraction for “it is.” Not correct here.

All these media have missing editors and proofreaders. I shall go now and pore over the contents of my fridge to check out its offerings for supper.
