Welcome back, FF fans! The Grammar Cop has found a plethora of plural misdemeanours for your perusal this week. 😄
- Even SARS-CoV-2 – itself a phenomena of nature – must adhere to these rules.
- Standing in my kitchen later that Saturday afternoon, I talked with my roommate, Steve (a pseudonym), checking in on how each of us are getting along in quarantine.
- Doctors called her a healthy carrier – someone infected by a disease but who display little or no symptoms of the disease, which means they often go on to infect many other people.
And the corrections:
- Here’s a common error made by many otherwise-astute writers. The word “phenomena” is plural. The singular form is “phenomenon.” Obviously this sentence is calling for the singular: Even SARS-CoV-2 – itself a phenomenon of nature – must adhere to these rules.
- If the subject of the clause is singular, as in “how each of us are getting along…,” then the verb that follows must be singular to agree with it: how each of us is getting along in quarantine.
- Same as the previous. The subject of the clause is singular: “someone infected by…” Therefore the verb that follows it must be singular as well: someone infected by a disease but who displays little or no symptoms of the disease… (If you’re uncomfortable about the plural “they” after that, you could reword the sentence, perhaps like this: Doctors called her a healthy carrier – someone infected by a disease but who displays little or no symptoms of it. Such carriers often go on to infect many other people.)
You can see that the Grammar Cop has been reading a lot of COVID-related material. Or is that materials? Hmm… Stay safe, everyone!
1-Covid adheres to as many rules as the writer of that sentence. None, whatsoever.
2-Too bad a grammar book wasn’t consulted before checking in with Steve (not his real name).
3-Obviously, the writer was infected by grammaritis.
Thank you, Dr Grammar (not her real name) for finding these felonious faux pas! 😀
