Friday Follies #247 – Making Grammar Great Again, One Hyphen at a Time

Arghh! The Grammar Cop was particularly cross about these crazy crimes!

  1. The new orders include a curfew in mostly liberal El Paso and a mask mandate in conservative-leaning Couer d’Alene, Idaho.
  2. In the United States, it was not until the 1960s that it became seen as unpatriotic and politically extreme to revisit those rules.
  3. Website Content: When client’s launch new websites, they need all of the static content that will appear on each of the new site’s pages.

And the corrections:

  1. Unless you read French, you probably couldn’t find the blooper in this sentence. But here in Quebec we sure can! The Idaho city’s name is not “Couer d’Alene.” It’s spelled COEUR D’ALENE. Shame on The Washington Post who sent out this newsletter. Hire a proofreader or copyeditor!
  2. The phrase “it became seen” is terribly awkward. Change to: In the United States, it was not until the 1960s that it started to be seen as unpatriotic and politically extreme to revisit those rules.
  3. Oh, the irony! This is from a job ad for writers! Why does it say “client’s” when it should say clients? It’s just a simple plural, not a possessive. Plurals never take an apostrophe. Calling all copyeditors once again!

The Grammar Cop is thinking of applying for one of those writer/copyeditor/proofreader jobs. But then she wouldn’t have time to write these columns for you. I stand by my FF fans!! 😄
