FF friends are once again invited to view the ghastly gaffes gathered by the gritty Grammar Cop.

And the corrections:

1. Here we seem to have bumped up against a common error. The word “data” is plural. We cannot say the data “is” or “shows” anything. We must say the data “are” or “show” something. So in the sentence above, it should say: …there are other COVID-19 data emerging. (The singular form of “data” is datum, from the Latin.)
2. It’s been a terrible week for sure, but by golly the Grammar Cop’s work must carry on! The problem is: “almost none of the protesters was wearing masks.” Why? No, it’s not that “was” should be “were.” The singular form “was” is correct here, because its subject is the singular pronoun, “none,” which is short for no one. The word that needs to be fixed is “masks.” It should not be plural, since its subject is the singular none. A person only wears one mask at a time. The sentence should read: …almost none of the protesters was wearing a mask. (If you prefer to get rid of the problematic “none,” the sentence can be reworded like this: …few of the protesters were wearing masks. This actually sounds smoother.)
3. Okay, obviously this is from an advertisement. The icky part is “priorize.” It’s not a word. (Icky, however, is!) The correct form is prioritize. It’s here, if you doubt the great Grammar Cop. (But you shouldn’t, because barring unforeseen circumstances – like a rare attack of carelessness or ignorance – she is always right. 😁)
