The Grammar Cop has found a variety of errors for this week’s list. Check out these lovely lulus!
- “The … odor has left many people feeling helpless and embarassed to expose their bare feet in public.” – LES COURS MEDICAL CENTRE ad. I am embarrassed on their behalf to read their misspelling… especially since one sentence later, they spell it correctly. <rolling eyes skyward>
- “…wants to review the transcript and allow each side to argue it’s case about…” – LOS ANGELES TIMES. Shame on them. The IT’S/ITS mixup should not exist in any medium, let alone a major-market newspaper like this one. Say it with me, friends: IT’S=IT IS. ITS=possessive.
- “People could be skating on Lachine Canal by 2015” – THE GAZETTE newspaper headline this week.
I’ll let you think about that last one. But don’t think too long or it’ll be 2015 before you know it! 😉
Crossed Eyes and Dotted Tees 
Oh, that it’s/its mistake is one of the easiest and most embarrassing (stops briefly to count) ones you can make. It’s similar to their/there in that it’s a difference I clearly know and understand, but that my fingers don’t seem to care much about when I’m typing and that spellcheck won’t pick up — a very dangerous combination.

Haha, you counted right! I think it’s/it’s comes more easily with practise, and by that I mean the more one sees it used correctly, the more its proper usage is remembered. And yes, we definitely can’t count on spellcheckers to catch such sneaky errors!

That’s true about spelling. Sometimes I can tell a word is wrong even if I’m not sure why. It just doesn’t look right. The word I could never spell at school was desiccated. It used to come up in spelling tests quite regularly, for some reason. Sadly, now that I can spell it I’ve never had to use it.
