Greetings, Friday Follies followers. (Say that 10 times fast!) This week’s errors involve spelling. Of course, you clever people can spot the mistakes immediately! Right?

1. MONTREAL GAZETTE: “…and drove him across the city, periodically slamming on the breaks so his face would…”
2. MONTREAL GAZETTE: “…her allegations forced the employer to delineate all of the reasons that actually lead to the firing, thereby placing the details of…”
3. THEANTIMEDIA.ORG: “…has conquered a significant chunk of Syria in the past few months, and presumably will be loathe to demilitarize parts of its territory…”

BONUS MISTAKE – THE SUBURBAN: (I couldn’t resist tossing in this one; it’s not the Suburban’s fault – I feel magnanimous today – but still, it took me just one second to check it in the IMDb; why couldn’t they?) “…an intimate screening of the film Mrs. Plowfrey at the Claremont in their library on…”

1. Of course, you slam on brakes, not “breaks.” At least I did, when I had a car. Well, maybe I didn’t slam them, exactly…
2. Once again, the past tense of “lead” is led. It is not the same as “read,” which is spelled the same, past or present. English is just weird and inconsistent. Get over it. 🙂
3. We’ve seen this before too. (And I have a feeling we will again. But not from us, right?) The word “loathe” is a verb which means “hate” or “detest.” But when you use it as it is here, when you are loath to do something, it’s spelled without an “e” at the end. When used this way it means “very reluctant.”

BONUS MISTAKE: I don’t know why, but when I was reading the Suburban article, the title of the film seemed implausible to me, that name “Plowfrey” – so I felt compelled to check it. I looked it up in the wonderful Internet Movie Database (imdb.com), and lo and behold, it turns out the title was wrong. The film is actually called Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont. It was clear to me how the error was made: the female star was Joan Plowright! The columnist told me the information was provided to him with the wrong spelling. Hmm.

Thats it fore speling misteaks. Haav a grate weak!
