Friday Follies #122 – Making Grammar Great Again, One Hyphen at a Time

Happy Friday, fellow grammophiles! This week the Grammar Cop has rescued some abused verbs for you. Rest assured that the wayward writers will pay for their crimes! (How? I’m workin’ on it! 😀 )

  1. “…makes for luridly fascinating reading that Rolling Stone itself would have gladly wrote about during its rebellious early years.”
  2. “The inquiry uncovered multiple, credible allegations of conduct that is inconsistent with the values and standards of…”
  3. “If there’s anything social media has emphasized, it’s that words have a lot of power.”

The corrections:

  1. First, kudos go to the writer for the correct use of “its” in possessive form, with no apostrophe. Yay. However, he or she blew it with the form of the verb, to write. Booo. You cannot say it “would have wrote about it” as you see above. The correct form is would have written about.
  2. Okay, so there are “multiple” allegations, PLURAL. Right? Therefore the verb that you see coming after it, “is,” is wrong. The word “is” is singular. But you need a plural here, are. It should say multiple, credible allegations of conduct that are inconsistent with…
  3. By now, most of the Grammar Cop’s regular readers will recognize this grave infraction here. What is it I always say about “social media”? The word “media” is… PLURAL. Yes. What’s the singular form of media? Medium. Facebook is a social medium. It is only one example of social media. Television is a medium. It is one of many different kinds of media. So the given sentence should read, If there’s anything social media have emphasized, it’s that words have a lot of power. And they do!

Verbs are now commanding me to publish this, log off, and eat dinner. Then I will watch some TV… because I like that medium.

  1. 1- “have gladly wrote”?? Seriously, dude! A bit too much weed, perhaps?
2-Multiple, credible allegations of lousy grammar prompted the Grammar Judge to throw the book at them; English Grammar for Dummies. Available at fine stores everywhere.
3-If there’s anything social media have emphasized, it’s terrible grammar, horrible punctuation, and the rampant misuse of apostrophes. 🙂
