Luckily, there usually isn’t a requirement for non-matching passwords!
They’re supposed to be stored encrypted and adding the time to compare your password to all the ones in the database, rather than just the one that matches the username you have would increase the time it takes to login!

The last one, “… that password is already in use…” is facetious but the sentiment and feeling of frustration is totally understood. 😀
