Ah, serendipity!
Yesterday I was rummaging around in the dresser drawer where I keep my small scarves, when I felt something papery way in the back. What’s this, I wondered. Carefully I drew out what looked like a greeting card and envelope.
“DAUGHTER,” it proclaimed, in large capital letters on the front. Oh! I must’ve bought this for my daughter Kathryn’s November birthday, I figured, but then put it away and…? In any case, I kept reading:
I gasped. This is perfect for my amazing Kathryn! Why, it fits her to a T. I hastily opened the card to read more.
A beautiful sentiment if ever there was one, and so fitting a wish for Kath. I couldn’t understand why it was still in my drawer, but continued to open it further, and saw:
Oh. My. God. Sudden realization flooded my head and heart! “El” was my dear late mother’s nickname for me. She sent me this card! In 1997! I was about the same age then as my daughter is now.
Tears pricked my eyes. I love my daughter exactly the same way my mom loved me. Each of us thought our daughters were special, remarkable people! Our love knew no bounds, and still abides. I revel vicariously in the glory of Kathryn’s achievements, just as my mom delighted in mine. And we adore our daughters just as they are.
What lucky mothers we were/are. Thank you for being you, my awesome daughter Kathryn! And thanks, Mom!

What a sweet story! 🥰
