Friday Follies #189 โ€“ Making Grammar Great Again, One Hyphen at a Time

Hi all! The Grammar Cop has prepared a potpourri of pitiful pickings for you today! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  1. “At Visique, our patients eye health comes first.”
  2. “Our independant 4-star Hotel Complex features:…”
  3. “The Quebec governement is trampling on the civil liberties of its minority groups.”

The corrections:

  1. Are your eyes “healthy”? If so, they would’ve spotted the problem here. It’s the eye health that belongs to the patients, so “patients” is meant to be possessive. In this case, it should say our patients’ eye health.
  2. The misspelling here should jump out at you. Got it? “Independant” is wrong; the word is independent. (My guess is that the writer’s first language is French, since it’s spelled with an “a” in that language.)
  3. This looks like another French/English snafu. In English, the word is spelled government. In French it’s gouvernement, with an e and a u in there. The French like to be fancy. ๐Ÿ˜„

Goodbye! Au revoir! Have a super sunny rest-of-the-week, featuring gobs of good grammar!

  1. 1-Our eye health comes first, but our grammar comes last. Please be patient until we learn.
2-Our independant 4-star Hotel Complex features spellcheck on all computers in the lobby. Unfortunately we wrote this in the office.
3-….as well as trampling on proper spelling in two languages. ๐Ÿ˜€
