Today the Grammar Cop presents the work of some spelling non-champions.
- A display including Trump-branded wine, champaign, water, and steaks is seen before presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign news conference event … in March 2016.
- Studies based on DNA sequences show that ratites continued to evolve into their modern counterparts as the continents seperated.
- At the new Time Out Market in the Eaton Centre, which had opened to great fanfair just before the pandemic, hours have been significantly reduced and restaurants are only opening at noon.
And the corrections:
- Apparently when you drink Champagne during a presidential campaign, it becomes “champaign.” 😂 [Note that it should be capitalized, as it’s named after the Champagne region in France.]
- Did you know that the continents never “seperated”? They did, however, separate.
- Fanfare, n. –
1. Music A loud flourish of brass instruments, especially trumpets.
The Grammar Cop is quite sure her point has been made – exclamation point! Tune in next Friday for our special Midsummer Quiz. Until then, have a safe week everyone!
I’m not a good speller, but I spotted these mistakes.

Ah, but your letters from England are perfect! As all your posts are!

Thank you, Ellie, but perfection is impossible. I was thinking of you as I published the first letters from England. At first, I didn’t think my style had changed over the years. I was shocked to find I deliberately used incomplete sentences, something I rarely do now. As to spelling, I think word processors automatically cleaned up my blatant mistakes. It’s a shame, because some would have made us laugh, I’m sure. Thank you for reading them.

1-I’ve lost my appetite entirely.
2-The writer of that sentence has devolved on the evolutionary scale by not using the modern tool of spell-check.
3-And the trumpets were played as the writer of that sentence was summarily fired and escorted by security out of the building. 😀
