Friday Follies #57 – 3 mistakes that make me go “Arghhh”

Hi, fellow afficionadoes aficionados of good grammer grammar and speling spelling. Today the Grammar Cop takes a mini-holiday… from punctuation problems. She has other goodies (baddies?) to share with you.

  1. MONTREALGAZETTE.COM video caption: “Mulcair addresses NDP Caucaus” Unless Mr. Mulcair was speaking to his caucus members along with a Mau Mau tribe in Kenya, this silly spelling error should have been averted.
  2. QUORA.COM: “Disciplinary action is quite rare except in cases where standard procedure and controller instructions were clearly flaunted without good cause.” This fascinating question-and-answer website normally features writing that is a cut above similar sites. However, the author of this reply to an aviation question fell prey to a common mixup between flaunted and flouted. (One flaunts one’s wealth. One flouts the rules.)
  3. THE SUBURBAN: “We cover cracked plaster beams with posters that extoll reading.” …Because what’s a FF post without a gaffe from this local weekly? I extol proper spelling wherever I find it – especially in a purported “back-to-school” supplement.

Next Friday, the Grammar Cop will be away for a few days visiting with her son, Mr. Apprentice-Grammar Cop. She will return with a renewed focus on rooting out appalling eyesores… so that you don’t have to. Hope you have a lovely error-free two weeks!

    1. Thanks Anne! I’ll miss writing it, but it’s actually a short whirlwind visit of barely 4 days and we have to make up for a year’s absence, so… I’ll be kept quite busy with Jeremy and his wife, galavanting about the Hamptons! 🙂
