Our Favourite Movies

I was going to call this MY favourite movies, but then I thought, no! Let’s all share our top five!

Here are mine, in no special order. The reason they’re on my Top-Five list is because I can watch them over and over again, and I always notice something new and wonderful in them every time. They’re replete with amazing acting, cinematography, etc., too! Here they are:

The Red Violin

Room

Prince of Tides

The Shawshank Redemption

Alien

    Not sure if I saw it or just think I did because I heard so many great reviews about it at the time.

    Room-
    Haven’t seen it. Yet.

    Prince of Tides-
    Saw it. Too schmaltzy.

    The Shawshank Redemption-
    Saw it. Great movie.

    Alien-
    Saw it. Great movie. Its “spawn” (oops, wrong franchise) were… ummm… not so much.

    MY five faves are:

    Casablanca-
    I would love to have been a character, any character, in that movie. I could watch it play again and again [Lol]!

    To Kill a Mockingbird-
    Why? Like Casablanca, it makes me feel like I should be inside the movie.

    The Little Shop Of Horrors (1961)-
    Why? Jack Nicholson.

    The Postman Always Rings Twice-
    Why? Jack Nicholson.

    One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest-
    Why? Jack Nicholson.

    The Witches of Eastwick-
    Why? Jack Nicholson.

    Batman-
    Why? Jack Nicholson.

    Okay, all Jack Nicholson films get lumped together as #2.

    Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-
    Why? Jack Ni… No, I mean Paul Newman and Robert Redford. And the fact that I saw it in a movie theatre in Toronto as a 15-year-old while on my first away-from-home-in-Montreal school-exchange-trip.

    Something’s Gotta Give-
    Why? Well, Jack Nicholson of course. But also Diane Keaton!

    Too bad Jack Nicholson wasn’t in the casts of Casablanca or To Kill a Mockingbird. Now, THOSE would have been movies to see!!!

      I agree with Casablanca, Mockingbird, and Cuckoo’s Nest… not so much the others. As I mentioned to you on phone, I like the dark Christian Bale Batman films, with Heath Ledger as the Joker.

  2. Can you believe that I’ve never seen any of these? LOL! I am not much of a movie watcher but I noticed that someone mentioned “Witches of Eastwick” and I loved that one.

    My problem is that I get sick when I watch graphic violence or gore–I mean physically ill!!! That said, when I do watch a movie it is more of a rom com, comedy or a nonviolent thriller.

        By now you should know that the violin is one of my favorite instruments. I still hate the fact that I only played it for 2 years before I quit!

        1. Oh, wow! Aw don’t beat yourself up over it; we all made some doozies of bad choices as kids! Hey, maybe there’s a soundtrack to The Red Violin. So even if you don’t get to see it (but it’s a real treat visually as well as aurally), you’ll at least get to hear the amaziinnnnnng violin music!

  4. This was super hard… I can’t help but read other’s responses and going… “hey yeah, that one’s good too.” Of course…that could potentially expand the list to 50 or more.
    Here’s my top 5 and a little explanation:

    The Wizard of Oz – My first feature length movie which became an annual television event for the family. It was the first horror movie what with wicked witches and flying monkeys.I learned the art of peeking at a movie through a peasized hole between my fingers.

    Fiddler on the Roof – I laughed and cried and sang and still do as I have converted the soundtrack to every music medium since the early 70’s. I now possess the MP3 format in my Ipod. It tackled the judism in my blood that I never knew about until 30 years later.

    The Colour Purple – I have a thing with persecuted peoples… My fathers black…my mother, jewish. I should have a chip on my shoulder the size of Hostess Foods.

    To Sir with Love. The first big beautifuk feel-good movie. It can still well up my eyes when LuLu belts out the title song. That song was also my first successful karoke event years later.

    The Elephant Man. A cinematographically brilliant movie with a catchline that I use in my life, perhaps fat too frequently….”I am not an animal!”

      Re Wiz: Love your “peeking at a movie through a peasized hole between my fingers” – perfectly apt description of my own situation – I was five when I saw it, and terrified. In fact when we got home I had 105F fever!! (Obviously something was brewing in me before, but the WW of the W clinched it!

      Yes, I loved Fiddler too, great story & music.

      Colour Purple, fabulous film, BTW u mean u *don’t* have a chip on your shoulder? (KIDDING sorta. ;-)))

      To Sir With Love, fine film, as was anything with Sidney Poitier!

      I never saw Elephant Man but I should, huh? I’m not sure which came first: “I am not an animal!” or “I am not a number! I am a free man!”-The Prisoner, 1967, Patrick McGoohan.

  5. I have watched room and oh my! I love it! It’s based on a book and I am so eager to get my hands on it. I mean, if the movie was this good, the book has to definitely be better.
    My personal favourites are:
    1. Pixar’s Brave
    2. Real Steel
    3. Edge of tomorrow
    4. Joy
    5. Pursuit of happiness

    And yeah, I love all the Marvel movies and the X Men franchise.

    1. Room is *amazing* and so is the book! Good thing that Emma Donoghue wrote the screenplay herself, and so kept all the great bits!

      Haven’t seen any of the others except Joy which was great, I agree!

      I can see by your choices you probably wish you could attend all the Comic Cons around! And my guess is you’re, well, a lot younger than I am! 😀

  6. i am glad to hear a review of Room. I loved the book so much that I am sort of afraid to see the movie. So many times, movies are a real letdown after you truly love the book. It’s one of my favorites of all time, which is saying a LOT.

    Not sure I can make a list of five, but one that’s definitely on it is Singin’ in the Rain. But then, I can watch dance movies all day. 🙂

    1. Room is a fabulous, faithful adaptation of the book, one of the rare ones. Have seen it 3 times and each time is a revelation, I can tell you. See the movie! You’ll be thrilled. (Emma Donoghue wrote the screenplay, so you can imagine.)

      Dance movies, so you must’ve seen Flashdance? and Saturday Night Fever? 🙂

  7. Haha, I so rarely remember which movie goes to which title–and I forget movies most of the time. So strange. But it’s nice that I can watch them over and over again. That said, I do know my favorites very very well. Here are some of them:

    Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse

    Mamma Mia!
    OK, I have a lot more. If they are my favorites I do remember them ;).

  9. loved room but probably wouldn’t enjoy watching it again but i can watch shawshank again and again and I do. The original rocky is my favorite because he is a man first and a boxer second. Loved american pie 2 and can watch it again and again. Loved avatar have watched it several times.
    so here goes

    and why because of the dancing scene with Bradley Cooper and jennifer Lawrence at the competition. It is the greatest 5 in the history of sport.
