Greetings, Friday Follies friends! The Grammar Cop has, as usual, picked a pile of petty problems for your perusal.
- “Music affects people different, depending on their musical tastes, says research at the Université de Montréal.”
- “Dimitrov and Medvedev have split their two previous matches, back in 2017. Neither have reached a Grand Slam final.”
- “Don’t worry about planting the American flag on Mars Mr President when there is so much to be done on protecting this planet and its fragile environment as well as the people on it including the number who want to get into America, not just American cells.”
The corrections:
- Many adjectives, when you want to turn them into adverbs, need -ly added at the end. In this sentence, the adjective “different” must become differently when used here as an adverb.
- This abominable writer figured that if “have split” works in the first sentence, then “have reached” will be fine for the second one, too! Well no, as it happens. It works in the first sentence because the subject of “have split” is plural: two guys, “Dimitrov and Medvedev.” But in the second sentence, the subject is singular: “neither,” meaning neither one. It should say: Neither has reached a Grand Slam final.
- Oh! here’s some fun for you! This poor sentence lacks punctuation. Completely. (It makes the Grammar Cop go Arrgghh!) Can you fix it? Here’s one way: Don’t worry about planting the American flag on Mars, Mr. President – there is so much to be done to protect this planet and its fragile environment, as well as the people on it. You may notice that I took the liberty of changing a couple of other teensy things, including the elimination of the last bunch of words. We don’t need those. 😉
Please do not worry any longer about music or Grand Slams or planting the flag on Mars. Have a restful and amusing weekend, FFers! See you next Friday!
1-At leastly the writer used “affects” instead of “effects”, says Professor Research.
2-The author of this sentence won’t win any prizes either.
3-This run-on sentence ran all the way back to Mars. All the little green men are laughing. 😀

1) True! As in #3, kudos to them for the “its” used correctly! 😀
2) NO prizes there. They’re on back order *maybe*!
3) As well they should! And they’d better stay there, since US borders seem to be locked and loaded now! 😦
