Friday Follies #16 – Some mistakes that make me go “Arghhh”!

Presenting: a few “oopsies” caught by the Grammar Cop lately. Are you guilty of any of these?

  • “Trudeau’s win is a “breath of fresh air,” said Dawson student, Sophie Landry. “[He] is a young, dynamic and invested – I think he’ll bring the change that the country needs.” Okay, this was written by a Dawson “Feature Writing” student, given a slot in a local newspaper. I would suggest that the student pay a bit more attention to proofing her/his work in future – specifically checking for missing (or extra!) words.
  • Now here are two errors that I’m sure were not appreciated by the person who was being headlined:
    – The photo caption refers to a “Marian Lenon,” second from left. However, in the article below, she is now “Marian Lennon.” If I were Marian Len(n)on, I would not be happy.
    – The large caption over a photo in an ad for a seniors’ residence says boldly: “JENNIER HOWE, AT CHARTWELL SINCE 2007.” But in the paragraph underneath, she is magically “Jennifer.”

Proofreading, proofreading, proofreading! So necessary! Why, even the Grammar Cop sometimes makes misteaks.
