The Grammar Cop is getting tired. Sick and tired, actually. Look, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Here we go.
- “Integrating school with real life experiences” – THE SUBURBAN (Back to School Supplement, ironically) This was a headline that someone should have caught. Are they real life experiences as opposed to fake ones? There should be a hyphen between “real” and life.” It’s a compound adjective. If you didn’t know that, get Back to School!
- “A Quebec Superior Court judge is expected render a decision Wednesday on an emergency request: an attempt stop a fake doctor from dispensing pseudo therapies.” – MONTREAL GAZETTE Did you see them? No, not just one, but two to’s missing! I know it takes “Two to Tango,” but still. Normally I let typos slide by for my purposes here, but the same word missing twice in one sentence? Had to give it a citation! The Grammar Cop will now close with the inevitable…
- “Among it’s more draconian provisions, the Bill…” THE SUBURBAN (still spurning my offer of cheap proofreading; still leaving goofs in the Editor in Chief’s own editorial…)
That’s it for this week. Hmm. Methinks the perps out there are getting cagier. They must know the Grammar Cop is on the job. See you next week!
Love the “real” v. “fake” comment. I recently saw a sign advertising “low discount prices.” I wonder whether “high discount prices” exist.

Also – I just remembered this, another favourite of mine: “high school student.” Whenever I see this, I imagine a student who’s been smoking pot or whatever.

This mistake is everywhere, it seems. Many people are either afraid of hyphens or don’t know when they should be used – so they just avoid them altogether! 😦
